Apple’s recent keynote briefly introduced the second-generation AirPods Pro, featuring a notable switch from a Lightning cable to a USB-C connection for the charging case, aligning it with the iPhone 15 series. However, this update brings more than just a new cable. The USB-C transition offers compatibility with a wide range of devices, such as iPads and MacBooks, and introduces bi-directional charging, a feature not previously possible with Lightning.
With the USB-C connector, you can now plug your AirPods Pro into an iPhone 15 and charge the earbuds directly from the phone itself.
The most significant enhancement, though, lies beneath the surface. Despite the exterior similarities to the previous AirPods Pro case, the new model boasts improved acoustic architecture. While the H2 chip remains the same, there are physical changes that enable a substantial shift.
This transformation is particularly crucial for technologies like Apple Vision Pro, aiming to seamlessly integrate the real and virtual worlds where audio plays a pivotal role.
When using the Apple Vision Pro, set to debut next year, AirPods Pro will support lossless audio—a feat previously unattained by these earbuds. Apple highlighted in a press release, “The H2 chip in the latest AirPods Pro and Apple Vision Pro, combined with a groundbreaking wireless audio protocol, unlocks powerful 20-bit, 48 kHz Lossless Audio with a massive reduction in audio latency.”
In addition to the acoustic enhancements, Apple has introduced an entirely new wireless audio protocol that operates independently of Bluetooth. Apple elaborated, stating that “when Apple Vision Pro becomes available early next year in the U.S., customers will be able to enjoy the most advanced wireless audio experience in the industry with the new AirPods Pro, offering exceptional entertainment, gaming, FaceTime calls, and much more.”
It’s important to note that aside from the USB-C transition and the acoustic improvements, there appear to be no other significant changes, such as alterations to charging speed or battery life.
